Selecting the Right Instrument
You know when I go into my local music store without setting my intention I’m like a kid in a candy store! This isn’t an exaggeration, there is so much I want to do, play and buy. By setting your intention for the visit you can go into the store mindful of what you are interested in learning more about. This way you can keep your visit on track and in line with your budget.
Research before you go in and talk to people you know who play an instrument. Sit down and listen to some of your favorite music and the sound that is created from their instruments, this may lead you to the ones that suit the sound you’re looking for. This way you're not going in blind and getting overwhelmed by all the options and music lingo. The staff at my favorite store are always there to help and guide my buying decisions. When I got my first guitar I took the suggestion from my teacher at the time and also got a deal on a new beginner guitar. The suggestion was that I start with a Stratocaster Guitar, easy and lightweight to play and learn on.
Over the years I’ve tried and experienced what works best for me. You can always ask about renting an instrument first before you purchase. Also keep in mind that instruments are like any other products ranging from knock-offs, imported and local made. You can buy the big name brands that most people have heard of or try a less expensive not as known brand that may give you the same quality and sound you’re after.
